Workers in Houston make their living in a variety of ways. Whatever the working environment, sexual harassment is a real possibility, as sad as this is.

The reasons behind workplace harassment are multifaceted, but whatever form harassment takes, it is always unacceptable. If you have been subjected to harassment, it is often difficult to know the best course of action to take. There are no easy answers, but it is important that all harassment is addressed.

What makes workplace harassment so difficult to report?

Being accused of overreacting

The majority of companies rely on teamwork to get the job done. Unfortunately, accusations of harassment are not always taken seriously and they can be seen as an attempt to break up the harmony of the workplace. It is not uncommon for co-workers to claim that you are overreacting to the situation and that what was said or done was only a joke. In truth, if you have been made to feel isolated or extremely uncomfortable, then your reaction will be justified. Try not to second guess yourself. You have every right to feel comfortable, safe and free from attack in the place where you spend most of your time.

Practical consequences

Ultimately, reporting harassment could have practical repercussions on your employment. You may find yourself demoted, having your hours slashed or even terminated altogether. These are all unacceptable responses to your claims of harassment. Not only that, they are considered retaliation, which is unlawful in Texas.

You should not have to work in a hostile environment and all forms of harassment and discrimination are wrong. If you are confused about what steps to take after being harassed, it might help to explore your legal options in more detail.
